Isabelle Chapuis is inspired by “Ugly Betty” in her rendition of awkward, yet refined, beauty. Although distorting our sense of beauty has always been present in the fashion industry, I feel like more and more this concept is trickling down to the bottom rung of fashion/beauty. The distortion is not of “new beauties” but an uglification of the female form (misfit models, Alexander McQueen etc). I feel like awkward beauty is attractive, but maybe that’s just living in an SF context. Modesty is in, but so are bare breasts and sheer everything. And that’s what I love about today.
