We, with a full compliment of senses, live in space and time; the blind live in a world of time alone. For the blind build their worlds from sequences of impressions (tactile, auditory, olfactory) and are not capable, as sighted people are, of a simultaneous visual perception, the making of an instantaneous visual scene. Indeed, if one can no longer see in space, then the idea of space becomes incomprehensible— even for highly intelligent people blinded relatively late in life.

Dispatches from the East pt. IV
On my way back from adventuring into Metuchen to find historical monuments and woodlands to photograph, I decided to suddenly parallel park on one side of Main Street. (I have attempted parallel parking maybe 3 times before and I can say I was not of sound mind when I made this decision). The street has an old timey downtown feel and I wanted to take some snapshots of quaint Jersey while still able. I got out of my car next to “Parisian Cafe” and saw girls coming out of a store down the way, so I decided to check it out. I heard as they passed, “When she said ‘Moby Dick…that’s by Charles Dickens, right?’ I had to leave.”
The Raconteur is a bookstore much like ones I frequent in the bay- ratty piles of books- shelves themselves really. I must say this shop wins in the furnishing department— a full dining set, leather couch, and awesome antique decor. It also serves as a venue for readings, musical acts, parties, celebrity sightings. While checking out, “Shakespeare! I like him.”
Stay classy, Jersey.
